Estimated gross pay—

Gross pay is a simple hours × hourly-rate estimate. It does not automatically apply overtime rates, taxes, deductions, premiums or local employment rules.

How to use the Time Card Calculator

Choose a one-week or two-week pay period, then enter the start and end time for each day worked. If you had an unpaid lunch or other unpaid break, enter its length in minutes.

You can leave days blank when no work was performed. If a shift crosses midnight, enter the actual start and end times; the calculator will treat an earlier end time as occurring on the following day.

The calculator shows each day's worked hours, weekly totals and the total for the full time card. If you enter an hourly rate, it also provides a simple estimated gross-pay figure.

How time card hours are calculated

For each completed day, the calculator finds the elapsed time between the start and end time and then subtracts the unpaid break.

Hours worked = End time − Start time − Unpaid break

Daily worked hours are then added together to produce the weekly and full-period totals.

Decimal hours are useful for payroll calculations. For example, 7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.50 hours, while 7 hours 15 minutes equals 7.25 hours.

What Counts as Hours Worked?

A time card should normally include the hours that count as working time under the rules and employment terms that apply to you. This may not always be identical to the time between arriving at and leaving the workplace.

Depending on the circumstances and location, working time can include activities such as required training, certain travel between work locations, overtime or time spent carrying out duties before or after a scheduled shift.

This calculator does not determine whether a particular activity counts as paid or working time. Enter the start time, end time and unpaid breaks that should be included according to your employer's records and the rules that apply to you.

Working-time rules vary by location. For official guidance, see GOV.UK guidance on calculating working hours or the U.S. Department of Labor guidance on hours worked .

Example time card calculation

Suppose you start work at 8:30 AM and finish at 5:00 PM, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

The elapsed time is 8 hours 30 minutes. Subtracting the 30-minute break leaves 8 hours of paid working time.

8h 30m − 30m = 8.00 hours

One-week and two-week time cards

Some workplaces use weekly time cards while others use a biweekly or two-week pay period. This calculator supports both without requiring a separate tool.

When two weeks are selected, Week 1 and Week 2 are calculated separately and then combined into one period total.

Overnight shifts and unpaid breaks

If an end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ended on the following day. For example, a shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is treated as an eight-hour elapsed shift before breaks are deducted.

Enter a break only when it should be excluded from worked time. Whether a meal, rest or other break counts as working or paid time can depend on applicable employment rules and the circumstances of the break.

Do not automatically deduct every break taken during a shift. If a break should count as worked time, leave it out of the unpaid break field.

Limitations

This calculator totals the working time entered and provides a simple gross-pay estimate when an hourly rate is supplied. It does not determine which activities legally count as working or compensable time.

The pay estimate does not automatically apply overtime, different rates for particular shifts, minimum-wage rules, premiums, bonuses, taxes, payroll deductions or other employment-related adjustments.

Actual payroll calculations can also use specific rounding or time-recording rules. Compare the result with your employer's timekeeping and payroll records when checking an actual payment.

Time Card Calculator FAQ

Can I use this as a two-week time card calculator?

Yes. Select “2 weeks” under Pay period and the calculator will display a second seven-day week and a combined total.

Does the calculator subtract lunch breaks?

Yes. Enter the number of unpaid break minutes for each day. Paid breaks should not be entered because they are normally included in worked time.

Can it calculate an overnight shift?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, CalcAtlas treats the end time as occurring the next day.

Does it calculate overtime?

No automatic overtime rule is applied. Overtime thresholds and rates can vary by employer and jurisdiction, so the calculator reports total hours and a simple gross-pay estimate using the hourly rate entered.

What are decimal hours?

Decimal hours express minutes as part of an hour. For example, 30 minutes is 0.50 hours and 15 minutes is 0.25 hours.
